At 29 weeks, Sensei Phil’s second son, George was born, weighing 3lb 4oz and was far sicker than he could have imagined; unable to breathe, he was resuscitated at birth and doctors spent two hours struggling to stabilise him. George was too sick for the local hospital and was transferred to St. George’s, which is 25 miles from Phil’s home.
When George was a week old, doctors told him they were sceptical about his survival and needed surgery to close a valve in his heart.
The surgery was a success but sadly the doctors didn’t see the improvements they had hoped for and doctors told him that it was becoming more likely that George would not make it home.
Despite the odds, after 6 months George is now home and George wouldn’t be here today, if it wasn’t for the dedicated and remarkable staff of St. George’s Neonatal unit.
It’s not too late to make a donation, just speak to Sensei Phil when you’re next at the Dojo.
Well done Sensei Phil!
